A clean and blank sheet of paper may eventually be filled with words or drawings. Skating on a "patch," a clean and blank piece of ice, had some similariites. Designs, all in the shape of figure eights, were created on the ice. Perfect circles were lined up and drawn with blades and looked a bit like artwork on ice.
