Guide Review - Review of 2010 Stars on Ice

On May 16, 2010, About.com's Guide to Figure Skating, Jo Ann Schneider Farris, attended "Smucker's Stars on Ice" which took place at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. This is her review of the show.

----------------------------

Each year, the best figure skaters in the world are selected to be part of Stars on Ice. In 2010, the show's cast included skaters that recently competed in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. That extraordinary cast was what drew audiences to the 2010 Stars on Ice show.

The Denver Stars on Ice cast included:

  • Meryl Davis and Charlie White - 2010 Olympic Figure Skating Silver Medalists Ice Dancing
  • Sasha Cohen - 2006 Olympic Ladies Figure Skating Silver Medalist
  • Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto - 2006 Olympic Figure Skating Silver Medalist Ice Dancing
  • Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao - 2010 Olympic Pair Skating Champions
  • Todd Eldredge - 1996 World Figure Skating Champion, Three-Time Olympian
  • Yuka Sato - 1994 World Figure Skating Champion, Two-Time Olympian
  • Michael Weiss - Three-Time United States Figure Skating Champion, Two-Time Olympian
  • Jeremy Abbott - Two-Time United States Figure Skating Champion, 2010 Olympian
  • Rachael Flatt - 2010 United States National Figure Skating Champion, 2010 Olympian
  • Alissa Czisny - 2009 United States National Figure Skating Champion

In both individual and group numbers, the skaters performed triple jumps, complicated footwork, lifts, and spins. Michael Weiss did his trademark moves: back flips and spread eagles on the heels of his Freedom blades. Olympic pair skating champions, Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao did huge throw triple jumps and lifts and spins that were perfect.

Other highlights of the show included Michael Weiss' performance to the Georgia Satellites' "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," Sasha Cohen's performance to Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah," Alissa Czisny's performance to "You'll Never Walk Alone" by Barbra Streisand, and Meryl Davis and Charlie White's Bollywood (the original dance they performed in Vancouver).

Colorado skaters and US Men's and Ladies Champions Jeremey Abbott and Rachael Flatt received great cheers from the crowd.

Ben Agosto and Tanith Belbin did a cute "Boy Meets Girl" number where Agosto lifted Belbin by holding only the backpack that was attached to her back. Ben Agosto also did two electric guitar solos as he skated around the rink. He stated that he loves to play the guitar and took it with him to the Vancouver Olympics to ease some of pressure. Davis & White and Belbin & Agosto did a quartet number together that celebrated U.S.A.'s Olympic ice dance victory.

2010 Olympic Figure Skating Champion Evan Lysacek did not perform in the Denver show. That was a disappointment for the Denver audience since Lysacek's presence would have made the show much better. It just seemed that an essential piece was missing; that essential piece was Evan Lysacek.

It was obvious that the cast had fun performing in Denver and that the audience enjoyed the show.
