Before You Consider Becoming a Figure Skating Coach

By , About.com Guide

Before you consider teaching figure skating, there are some things you should know.

Pro - Teaching Skating Is Fun!

Teaching figure skating can be rewarding and fun. Most people love passing their knowledge of figure skating on to others.

Con - Building Up and Keeping a Clientele Is Not Easy

It is difficult to make a living by just teaching skating. If you do decide to make coaching figure skating a career, understand that building up a private student base may take time. It might be necessary to have another source of income to make ends meet.

Pro - Figure Skating Coaches Can Make A Lot of Money (Sometimes!)

Figure skaters pay about $20 to $30 for a twenty minute private figure skating lesson. Thirty minute private lessons will range from $30 to $45. It is possible for a figure skating coach to make a lot of money if he or she is able to build up and maintain a large private student base.

Con - Ice Arenas Sometimes Charge High Pro Fees

It is important for skaters to understand that figure skating coaches usually are independent contractors and are not employees of an ice arena. The rink usually charges coaches a percentage of each lesson or a monthly or daily fee for using the ice arena.

Con - No Health Insurance, Sick Leave, or Vacation Benefits

Most figure skating coaches are independent contractors, so health insurance, sick leave, and vacation benefits that come with most jobs are not usually available to ice skating teachers.

Con - Figure Skaters Switch Coaches

One of the hardest things anyone who coaches figure skating goes through is "losing a student." Most figure skating coaches put in long hours and do care about the people they give lessons to. Some skaters grow up with a certain coach and leaving that special teacher and mentor can be traumatic for both parties involved. Losing a student also means that a skating coach suffers a financial loss.

Pro and Con - Teaching Skating Is Hard Work and Satisfying Work

Although figure skating coaches spend long hours in a cold ice arena, most people that teach ice skating will say that that teaching skating is satisfying. People admire accomplished figure skating coaches.

Pro and Con - Working With the Public Has Its Pros and Cons

Most ice skating teachers will have to deal with difficult figure skating parents and with difficult students. Some people love working with the public, while others do not. Teaching skating is for a person that loves to work with the public.
