Nine Pair Figure Skating Teams Who Were Watched at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games

The 2014 Olympics were scheduled to take place in Sochi, Russia from February 6, 2014 through February 22, 2014.  This is a list of some of the pair figure skaters who were watched during the Winter Olympic Games.

Russian pair skating champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov won the 2013 world pair skating title and also won the European figure skating title three times.  In 2011 and 2012 they were second at the World Figure Skating Championships. It was said that they would be the favorite pair to win in Sochi, and on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, that prediction became true.  Volosozhar and Trankov are now the 2014 Olympic Pair Skating Champions. Russia also won the Olympic figure skating team event.

 

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy - Germany

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy won the bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver and then again won bronze in Sochi in 2014.  In addition, they won the pair skating title at the World Figure Skating Championships and at the European Figure Skating Championships four times, the German national pair skating title seven times, and won the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final three times.  

 

Qing Pang and Jian Tong - China

Chinese and World Pair Skating Champions Qing Pang and Jian Tong won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. They were known for their incredibly high twists where Jian throws Quin very high in the air.  

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford - Canada

Canadian pair skaters Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford won the Canadian national pair skating title in 2012 and 2013 and also won the bronze medal at the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships.  

Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch - Canada

Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch became pair skating partners in 2009 and went on to win the Canadian national pair skating title in 2011.  They placed 4th at the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships.  

Peng Cheng and Zhang Hao - China

Zhang Hao won the Olympic pair skating silver medal with Zhang Dan in 2006.  He teamed up with a new partner, Peng Cheng, in May of 2012. Zhang Hao also competed in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games with Zhang Dan.  Zhang and Zhang were not related even though they have the same surname.

Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers - Canada

Canadian pair skaters Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers have won the bronze medal in pair skating at the Canadian National Figure Skating Championships for four consecutive seasons (2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014).  They have skated together since 2005.   

Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay - USA

At the 2014 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, pair figure skaters, Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay, won the silver medal.  In 2013, they won bronze.  They have skated together since May of 2011. 

Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir - USA

Only two pair skating teams from the USA qualified for the 2014 Olympics.  Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir are the 2013 U.S. Pair Skating Champions and were one of the two teams from the United States that qualified to compete in Sochi. Shnapir was born in Russia, but he moved to the United States when he was a toddler.  Their considerable size difference make it possible for them to perform very athletic pair skating moves. 

Anyone Can Win!

Once, figure skating seemed somewhat "fixed," but under the current International Judging System for figure skating, the pair skaters that accumulated the most points won gold at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
