A Boarding School for Figure Skaters:
Shattuck-St. Marys School is a co-educational boarding and day school for students in grades 6-12 that offers a full-time figure skating program. Top coaches and training are provided for students and the school's program is college preparatory.
Shattuck-St. Marys School is the first private boarding school in the United States to offer figure skating training. The school was founded in 1858 and is one of the oldest college preparatory schools in the Midwest.
Director :
Shattuck-St. Marys School's Director of Figure Skating is Diana Ronayne. She was the Director of Skating at the world famous Colorado Springs World Arena figure skating training center before coming to Shattuck-St. Mary's School. She has trained national and international figure skaters. Her most famous student is Ryan Jahnke.
Two Ice Rinks:
Two ice sheets are available to the students of Shattuck-St. Mary's School. In addition to figure skating, the school offers a competitive hockey program for boys and girls. (Shattuck-St. Mary's School is known for its excellent hockey program.)
Off-Ice Training:
The students involved with the figure skating program at Shattuck-St. Marys School can take off-ice classes to help with their figure skating. Dance classes are part of the program. Also, conditioning classes are offered.
College Preparatory:
Shattuck-St. Marys School is a college preparatory school. Students strive for academic excellence and are also able to train full-time at figure skating since the dorms and classrooms are within walking distance from the school's ice arenas.
A wireless network keeps students, parents, and faculty connected. Most classes have no more than fourteen students.
School Schedule:
Students that figure skate wake up at around 5:00 AM and skate two hours before academic classes begin. Figure skating is considered a class, so skaters return to the rink later in the day for more training.
Lessons:
Daily private lessons with each of the figure skating coaches on the Shattuck-St. Mary's staff, Diana Ronayne and Tom Hickey, are included in the student's figure skating fee. If a skater needs extra instruction, parents can arrange more private lessons for their child.
Location:
Shattuck-St. Mary's is in Faribault, Minnesota just forty-five miles south of the Twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Student Population:
Shattuck-St. Mary's has a student population of four hundred and seventeen students. The students come from thirty-four states in the U.S. and from twenty-two different countries.
Famous Students:
Marlon Brando, one of Shattuck-St. Mary's former students, began acting on the stages of the school.
Outreaches:
Lessons and programs for those who are not students at Shattuck-St. Mary's are available to the community through the Skating Academy in conjunction with Faribault Parks and Recreation. Other programs include Community Skate, Learn to Skate and Freestyle Sessions.In addition, week-long figure skating training camps are offered in June. Those camps include instruction from Shattuck-St. Mary's Director of Figure Skating Diana Ronayne and Tom Hickey, Director of Figure Skating Operations. Also, some other figure skating coaches such as Kathy Casey, Doug Leigh, Christy Krall, and Ryan Jahnke have participated in the figure skating camps. The camps include room and board for the ice skaters, daily on-ice and off-ice sessions, and group instruction.
