Can Adults Skate and Compete? Is There An Age That Is Too Late to Start?

By Jo Ann Schneider Farris, About.com

Question: Can Adults Skate and Compete? Is There An Age That Is Too Late to Start?

Adults can certainly skate and compete in figure skating. There are so many opportunities for adults in skating.

Answer:

Both US Figure Skating and Ice Skating Institute offer tests and competitions especially for adults.

In fact, US Figure Skating holds Adult Nationals every year.

Some adults decide to pursue ice dancing, since jumping is not required, but other adults prefer free skating and enjoy doing jumps and spins. Many adult skaters also do synchronized skating.

Many rinks have special skating practice sessions for adults only, but many adults like to practice on the same ice as the kids!

There are ice skating camps especially for adult skaters, ice dance weekends, adult pair skating events, adult figure skating clinics, and most rinks offer learn-to-skate classes especially for adult skaters.

It is never too late to begin to skate!
