Why Do You Like Figure Skating?

I Love Figure Skating!

Everyone has a reason to figure skate. Some people just like the feeling of gliding on the ice. Some people like getting exercise inside an ice rink. Others like spinning and jumping. Many say that figure skating is challenging and there are always new things to learn.

There are a few people that skate because they have a parent that forces them to do it and there are others who wish they could skate. I feel sorry for people who can't skate or live in areas where ice skating does not exist since skating has given me so much pleasure.

Can I say ‘all of the above’?

I figure skating because of the freedom on ice. The speed on a glide, that special moment when you hit the ‘sweet spot’ on a spin and feel as if you can go on forever, the exhilaration of landing a jump, learning new things…it just feels great to skate. That’s why I love taking to the ice.

(Plus a little competition between peers is always fun. ;)

I learned to skate after 40 – I only meant to learn enough to be safe and not embarrass my husband (accomplished hockey player) and children (hockey and figure skating). It’s been 2 full seasons now, and I’ve never had so much fun at any sport in my whole life. I’ve passed my preliminary dances, and can’t wait to learn the next set. Backward dancing – a whole new level of fear! It’s what keeps me young on the inside.

I started out as a very slow skater. This was my biggest issue, but now, as i have improved, i feel that the moments that i love skating the most are in the seconds that i am gliding backwards into a lutz jump (or anything else), going fast enough to hear wind in my ears! I just Love it! This rush of power and overall focus that i can get from only skating is my lifelong addiction. I am so glad to have discovered it!!
