Australia's Ice Skating Community is in Shock

Thursday March 29, 2007
Australia's figure skating community is in shock. At about 11:00 PM, on March 28, 2007, two Australian figure skating officials were killed. A promising young Australian skater is missing and presumed dead. A horrible accident happened when a 34-foot cruiser carrying many of the greats in the Australian ice skating community collided with a ferry under Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Liz Cain, 1980 Olympian, and coach and mother of Australian Men's Figure Skating Champion, Sean Carlow, lost her leg. Sean saved his mother's life by diving into the water after she fainted when part of her leg was cut off at impact. The evening cruise had been a way for the group to celebrate being together during a Kathy Casey Seminar. Kathy Casey was not on the boat.

I am so, so sad to hear this story. I met Liz Cain and Sean Carlow just recently when they came to the United States to prepare for the Four Continents Championships. I just saw Kathy Casey last week and she was so excited about going to Australia. I am thinking and praying for Australia's skating community today.
