Three Time US National Figure Skating Champion:
In 2009, at the age of fourteen, Joshua Farris won his third national figure skating title when he won the US novice men's event. He is also the 2008 US intermediate men's champion and the 2006 US juvenile boys champion.
How Joshua Began Skating:
Joshua Farris began to skate when he was only five years old when his mother took him skating for his birthday. After the birthday outing, he asked his parents for ice skating lessons. He showed promise and talent right away, so he began private lessons shortly after completing his first learn-to-skate series of lessons.
Early Skating Sucess:
Farris mastered the Axel jump quickly. As a youngster, he won almost every ice skating competition he entered.
Training and Coaching:
In February of 2007, the Farris family left their home in Washington and relocated to Colorado so that Joshua could train under coaches Tom Zakrajsek and Becky Calvin at the Broadmoor Skating Club and the Colorado Springs World Arena. Farris also works with choreographer Tom Dickson.
Winning 2009 National Performance:
Joshua did several triple jumps during his 2009 US national novice gold medal performance. He did a triple loop, triple-Lutz/triple toe-loop combination, triple-flip/double toe-loop combination, an outside spread eagle into a double Axel into an inside spread eagle, and a triple-Salchow/double toe-loop/double loop jump combination. He also did a Bielman spin.
Triples Jumps and Bielmans:
Joshua Farris does triple Lutz jumps and Bielman spins with ease. Those moves have become his trademark moves.
Favorite Skater:
Farris has stated that the figure skater he looks up to is 1988 Olympic figure skating champion Brian Boitano. At the 2009 AT&T US Figure Skating Championships, Joshua stated that he especially admires Boitano's triple Lutz.
Family:
Joshua's family includes his parents Rodney and Erin Farris. He has an older brother. His grandmother also has relocated to Colorado. His mother teaches piano to some of the skaters that train at the Colorado Springs World Arena.
Dreams:
Like most young figure skaters, he dreams of being an Olympic figure skating champion.
