Ron Jellse - Legendary Artistic Roller Skating Coach: Ron Jellse left an impact on every skater he taught. Artistic roller skaters from all over the world remember him as a person who had great knowledge of skating. He handled all situations in a calm manner and also took the time to acknowledge every individual.
Date of Birth: Ron Jelse was born on March 2, 1937.
Ron Jellse - Skater: Ron Jellse skated in the 1940s and 1950. In 1948, he won the U.S. National Juvenile Dance title. In 1950, he became the National Junior Boys Figure Champion. In 1956 and 1957 he won the National Senior Figure title. He also competed and won at Fours.
Ron Jellse - Coach: Ron Jellse's began coaching artistic roller skating in the late 1950s. His first great accomplishment was when his student, Jim Harmer, won the Junior Men's singles event. In 1979, his student, Gary Schmidt, qualified for the world championships. In 2000, his student, Jason Nelson, won a bronze medal at the world championships. In 2004, his student, Ashley Hinton, won a gold medal in Junior World Class Ladies Figures at the world championships. In 2005, she took the silver. Ron continued to coach top skaters all the way through 2006.
Expert at Figures: In ice skating, figures have been eliminatated, but artistic roller skaters still compete in figures. Ron Jellse's students were considered some of the best skaters at figures in the world. and some of his students were the youngest to compete at the world class level in figures. Some of his students were the youngest in the U.S. to pass figure tests. In 2004, his student, Ashley Hinton, won the gold medal at the world championships in Junior Figures.
Family: Ron Jellse married Nancy on September 2, 1972. The couple had two children: Shawn and Roxanne.
"Mr. Ron": Ron Jellse was called "Mr. Ron" by his students.
Passed Away in 2007: Ron Jellse passed away on March 26, 2007 and is missed by many people in the artistic roller skating world. He died of a heart attack. He was seventy years old.
