July 1 Deadline:

Figure skating coaches in the United States who wish to teach at US Figure Skating's events, tests, and competitions are required to register, pay certain fees, buy liability insurance, and pass certain continuing education tests by July 1 of each year.

Must Be a Member of US Figure Skating:

Figure skating coaches who wish to coach skaters at US Figure Skating events, tests, and competitions must be a member of US Figure Skating. Most people join US Figure Skating by joining a US Figure Skating member club, but some people are US Figure Skating individual members. Either type of US Figure Skating membership is acceptable for ice skating coaches.

US Figure Skating membership fees are due before July 1 of each year.

Pay an Annual Coaches Registration Fee:

In addition to joining US Figure Skating, all figure skating coaches who wish to teach their figure skating students at US Figure Skating's events, tests, and competitions must pay an annual registration fee in addition to the annual US Figure Skating membership fee. All registered coaches will be mailed a US Figure Skating Rulebook. The registration fee also includes a required background check.

Figure skating coaches must register and pay the registration fee before July 1 of each year.

Join the Professional Skaters Association:

Any figure skating coach wishing to be credentialed at a U.S. Figure Skating qualifying competition must be a member of BOTH U.S. Figure Skating and the PSA Professional Skaters Association.

PSA membership dues must be paid before July 1 of each year.

Obtain Liability Insurance:

In order to register as a coach with US Figure Skating, all figure skating coaches must first obtain liability insurance through the PSA Professional Skaters Association.

Liability insurance must also be paid and obtained before July 1 of each year.

Pass CER Figure Skating Coaching Continuing Education Requirement Tests:

As of July 1 of each year, anyone coaching figure skating at U.S. Figure Skating's sanctioned events is required to meet a mandatory CER continuing education requirement. Course requirements may be met online or at Professional Skaters Association (PSA) conferences, seminars, and workshops.

Figure skating coaches wishing to coach at qualifying events must complete at least four courses before July 1 of each year, and figure skating coaches wishing to coach at nonqualifying US Figure Skating events must complete at least three courses before July 1 of each year.

A fee is required for most CER courses.

Exemptions:

Ice skating instructors who only teach group skating lessons or only teach at ISI Ice Skating Institute events and competitions are not required to join US Figure Skating, register with US Figure Skating, join the Professional Skaters Association, and pass CER continuing education requirement tests; however, most ice arenas do require coaches to obtain liability insurance. If an ice skating teacher is not a PSA Member, both US Figure Skating and the Ice Skating Istitute offer liability insurance options.
