Meet the 2014 Russian Olympic Figure Skating Team

Russian Olympic Figure Skaters 2014

The 2014 Russian Olympic Figure Skating Team includes three pair skating teams, three ice dance teams, two single ladies, and one single man.  In addition to qualifying for individual Olympic figure skating events, Russia has qualified to participate in the Olympic figure skating Team Trophy event.   

Evgeni Plushenko - Men

In addition to winning Olympic gold in 2006, Evgeni Plushenko of Russia won silver at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games and won the men's world figure skating title in 2001, 2003, and 2004.  He is known for being able to land quadruple jumps followed by triple jumps and double jumps. 

Russia qualified for only one spot for a male single skater.  Although Plushenko placed second at the 2014 Russian Figure Skating Championships and did not compete at the 2014 European Figure Skating Championships, he was selected for the 2014 Russian Olympic Figure Skating Team.  His selection has caused much discussion and controversy.

Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov - Pairs

Russian pair skating champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov won the 2013 world pair skating title and also won the European figure skating title three times.  In 2011 and 2012 they were second at the World Figure Skating Championships. Some say that they may be the favorites to win in Sochi.

Adelina Sotnikova - Ladies

Adelina Sotnikova won silver at the 2013 and 2014 European Figure Skating Championships.  She also won the Russian figure skating title in 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2014.  

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev - Ice Dancing

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev won bronze at the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships and also won the European ice dancing title in 2013.   They have skated together since 2000.

Julia Lipnitskaia - Ladies

Julia Lipnitskaia is the youngest ever ladies European figure skating champion.  She won that title just a month before the 2014 Olympic Games when she was only fifteen years old. She is also the 2012 World Junior Figure Skating Champion.  

Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov - Pairs

Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov won the silver medal at the European Figure Skating Championships three times and are the 2012 Russian national pair skating champions.  They also took silver at the 2007 World Junior Figure Skating Championships and are the 2012 Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final silver medalists.  

 

Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov - Ice Dancing

Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov won the Junior World Figure Skating Championships in 2010.  They went on to win medals at the the European Figure Skating Championships in 2012, 2013, and 2014 and won the silver medal at the Russian national figure skating championships in 2012, 2013, and in 2014. The team began skating together in 2004, but broke up in 2005. After that, Ilinykh lived in the United States for two years and trained without a partner with Marina Zoueva and Igor Shpilband in Michigan.  IIinykh and Katsalapov began skating together again in 2008.

 

 

Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov - Pairs

Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov are the 2014 Russian national pair skating champions.  They are also the 2014 European pair skating silver medalists and the 2012 European bronze medalists.

Victoria Sinitsina and Ruslan Zhiganshin - Ice Dancing

Victoria Sinitsina and Ruslan Zhiganshin won the junior world ice dance title in 2012.  During the 2011-12 competition season, as junior level ice dancers, they seemed to win every competition they entered.  In addition to winning the 2012 junior world title, they won the Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final.  They are the 2014 Russian national bronze medalists and the team placed 4th at the 2014 European Figure Skating Championships.
