Meet the 2014 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team

The 2014 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team was chosen at the United States National Figure Skating Championships which took place in Boston, Massachusetts on January 12, 2014.

Ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White not only won the U.S. ice dance title for six consecutive years (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014), but they also won silver at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and, since then, won the World Figure Skating Championships twice.  Ice skating fans know that the battle for Olympic ice dancing gold in Sochi will be between Davis and White and Canadian, World, and Olympic Ice Dance Champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.

Gracie Gold is the 2014 U.S. National Figure Skating Champion and the 2013 U.S. ladies silver medalist.  After winning the U.S. junior ladies title in 2012, she rose to the top of the championship ladies ranks overnight. She scored the highest free skate score ever recorded in US ladies figure skating history at the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and her hope to compete in the Winter Olympic Games has become a reality.

Ashley Wagner is the 2012 and 2013 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating Champion and the 2012 Four Continents Champion.  Although she placed 4th at the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, she was selected for the 2014 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating team.

Jeremy Abbott - Four Time U.S. Figure Skating Champion

Jeremy Abbott won the 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and represented the USA at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.  

Jason Brown - Olympic Figure Skater 2014

Jason Brown, of Highland Park, Illinois trains in Monument, Colorado under coach Kori Ade who has coached him since he was five years old. He has won medals at the junior world figure skating championships twice, is the 2011 Junior Grand Prix Final champion, and the 2010 U.S. national junior men's champion. He is known for his quiet and effortless skating and for being one of the nicest and friendliest figure skaters in the USA. He is the first teenage male figure skater from the USA to make the Olympic figure skating team since 1976.

Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir - Two-Time U.S. Pair Skating Champions

Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir won the U.S. pair skating title in 2013 and in 2014.  They have skated together since June of 2006. 

Polina Edmunds - 2014 US Ladies Silver Medalist

Polina Edmunds finished second at the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.  The fifteen year old from San Jose, Calfornia won the U.S. Junior Ladies figure skating title in 2013.  Edmunds first experience at the championship senior level was at the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.   She placed second in both the short program and free skate which earned her a spot on the 2014 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team.

Maia and Alex Shibutani - 2014 U.S. Ice Dance Bronze Medalists

Maia and Alex Shibutani are the first sister-brother ice dance team to represent the USA at the Winter Olympic Games.  They won the world ice dancing bronze medal in 2011.  After the Shibutani family watched the World Figure Skating Championships in 2003, Maia and Alex began ice dancing together.  They won the intermediate, novice, and junior national ice dancing titles.

Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay - 2014 U.S. National Pairs Silver Medalists

At the 2014 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, pair figure skaters, Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay, won the silver medal.  In 2013, they won bronze.  They have skated together since May of 2011. 

Madison Chock and Evan Bates - US National Ice Dance Silver & Bronze Medalists

Evan Bates competed in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games with Emily Samuelson, so the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi will be his second Olympics. He teamed up with Madison Chock in 2011, and the Chock-Bates ice dance team earned the silver medal at the 2013 US National Figure Skating Championships.

What About Mirai Nagasu?

Although 2010 Olympian Mirai Nagasu won the 2014 US figure skating ladies bronze medal and placed 4th at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, she was not selected for the 2014 Olympic figure skating team. This decision has caused some controversy.
