Ice Skating in China

Figure skating began to become popular in China around the 1950s.  At first China was never taken seriously in the figure skating international scene, but that changed when Chen Lu won the ladies title at the World Figure Skating Championships in 1995 and earned Olympic bronze medals in 1994 and 1998. Today, serious figure skaters who train in China train are selected at a very young age for the sole purpose of being trained to become ice skating champions. Those selected consider it a great honor to represent China as figure skaters.
