2014 Sochi Olympic Pair Skating Comments:

Russia hoped to show the world that their pair skaters are the best. Until the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Russia had earned at least one medal at twelve consecutive Olympics in pair skating. The hope that Russia would again reign in pair skating became a reality in Sochi when Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov won gold after skating two outstanding performances. Their team mates, Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov, also skated outstanding performances and won silver. The German pair and four-time world champions, Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, made some errors in their free skate. They dropped to third even though they placed second in the short program. Savchenko and Szolkowy won bronze in Vancouver in 2010 and ended up with the bronze again in 2014. Chinese pair skaters Pang Qing and Tong Jian, who have skated together for over twenty years, skated their final Olympic performance before retiring from competitive skating and finished fourth overall.
