Colorado figure skater, Haley Gans, died tragically in a skiing accident on Friday, November 20, 2009. She was fourteen years old. Haley brought joy to everyone she touched. She passed hugs and smiles around every day, and she brought happiness to the ice skating world. Many people in figure skating knew and loved Haley. Gans was hearing impaired, but that disability did not stop her from doing great things in skating and in life. In this article, those who knew Haley share their memories.

Christina Kaiser Remembers Haley Gans:

Haley was always smiling, always happy, nice and supportive. She wasn't an envious person and had the heart of what would be called a true champion.

She and I were working on a jump one time and instead of thinking "don't land," or "I have to get this first," she would clap for me and support me saying "SO CLOSE!" in an excited way, and I would clap for her. She and I both eventually got the jump and we were both happy for each other.

She worked hard all the time, she didn't believe things were going to just be handed to her, and she knew about life. She would play and be happy, but she was still always striving for something.

She always ran up to me and hugged me whenever she saw me and we would laugh and do sign language together. I didn't know much, but I knew the alphabet and would try spelling things out to her, sometimes she would just say "huh?" and we'd laugh. She taught me words like "skating" and "horse" and "cow." Every time I see someone do sign language, I now think of her.

We would also warm up together and run around the rink or work on off-ice jumps together, and we liked doing handstand contests a lot; she normally won.

Sometimes I would watch her skate her long or short and I thought "wow, she has amazing artistry." We played cards of course, and she was especially good at Egyptian Rat Screw, not really President. She just knew how to cheer a person up.

She never spoke a curse word or made sexual jokes to make people laugh; she had other ways. She was just that innocent and just that perfect. She never tried to fight back and insult people.

Her hearing, seemed completely fine, and she was treated like a normal person, but she wasn't normal, she was...perfect I never saw her cry. She is just one of those people, who was born to be nice, happy, caring, and angelic.

Now I believe she is an angel. I was watching a video and it showed Sushi and he seemed happy. Some people say that dogs can sense things, and I think he was happy because he knows she is in heaven.

All in all, every moment I spent with Haley was a happy moment and she was an amazing person and the best friend that anyone could have, I will of course miss her, but I hope to one day see her again in heaven. Rest in peace Haley, I love you.

Madi Spialek Remembers Haley Gans:

Haley and I met a few years ago at a skating competition; we became friends immediately. We always competed against each other, hugging and wishing each other well every time. She was the sweetest and nicest girl. I loved how Haley felt her music; you wouldn't have ever known she was deaf. She was a beautiful skater. we would text each all the time, we talked about our favorite subjects in school, and she told me how she loved math. I will forever miss Haley, she will always be in my heart, she was an amazing person.

Love, Madison Spialek
