Designs were skated on clean ice in the shape of a figure eight. These designs were called figures and that is why Figure Skating is called FIGURE Skating.

Dick Button won the Men's Olympic figure skating title in 1948 and in 1952. He was the first American to win an Olympic ice skating title and the only American to win two Olympic gold medals in figure skating.

Loops are compulsory figures that look like little oblong circles inside larger round circles. . Since compulsory figures are no longer included in ice skating competitions, loops are now done in figure skating step sequences. Doing loops in footwork sequences may give an ice skating competitor extra points.
