Test track figure skating events are meant to encourage figure skaters since many skaters become discouraged and drop out of competing when they are required to land difficult double and triple jumps at standard (well-balanced program) free skating competition events.

The juvenile freestyle test requires an Axel, so Axels are permitted in juvenile level test track programs, but jumps that are harder to do than an Axel are not allowed. Skaters competing in a test track juvenile competition will not have to compete against skaters that execute double or triple jumps.
Competitors may participate in either the test track or free skating track but not both during the same competition. The 6.0 judging system is used, rather than the newer IJS international figure skating judging system.
