Interpretive

By Jo Ann Schneider Farris, About.com

Definition: Interpretive is a figure skating competition event that is done in ISI competitions and some USFS non-qualifying events.

All competitors skate to the same piece of music that is chosen by the competition organizers. The skaters don't hear the music until the time for the warm-up for their event.

During a short warm-up period, the selected music is played and heard for the first time by the competitors. The competitors attempt to develop a program during that warm-up. Then, all the competitors are taken to a soundproof room. Each competitor is brought out of the soundproof room individually and then performs.

Examples: The object of interpretive ice skating events is to interpret skating to music and have fun competing.
