Artificial outdoor ice arenas have opened in cities all over the world. Some of these arenas are synthetic; others are temporary or permanent ice sheets. Many of these arenas are opened just in the winter months and especially for the holiday season. Surprisingly, some of the best outdoor ice skating goes on in southern California during the winter.

Ice Skating At the Queen Mary is part of CHILL, a winter holiday attraction inside and outside the Queen Mary Dome.

Southern California residents who live in the San Fernando Valley area can enjoy ice skating on real, not artificial ice, at Woodland Hills Ice which is located at the Westfield Promenade shopping center. Skate rental is available.
Beverly Hills Ice Rink is a rink with real ice located in front of Beverly Hills City Hall. The rink is only open during the winter holiday season.

Holiday Ice Rink is a real ice rink located in downtown Culver City.

L.A. Live is located in Downtown Los Angeles next to the Staples Center and Los Angeles Convention Center. An outdoor ice rink, Holiday Ice, is located at Nokia Plaza at L.A. Live. The rink is only open for short time during the winter holiday season.

Located in Orange County, Irvine Spectrum Holiday on Ice is a small outdoor ice rink located at Irvine Spectrum shopping center. The facility is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The ICE at Santa Monica may be the largest outdoor ice rink in southern California. One rink is 8000 square feet and there is a smaller 400 square foot ice sheet for children under eight. Lessons for all ages are available. It's a rink with real, not synthetic ice.

Downtown on Ice started the outdoor ice skating fad in southern California. It's a real, not artificial ice rink that is located on Pershing Square right in front of the Biltmore Hotel. A unique feature of the facility is that skaters are allowed to push strollers around the rink's ice surface.

The W Hotel in Westwood converts it's swimming pool into an ice skating rink during the winter months. The "ice" is synthetic. A restaurant/bar is next to the rink. Hotel guests can inquire about combination room and skating packages. Private cabanas are available at the rink's side.

Skate Into the World of Tinker Bell is a beautiful outdoor rink. Disney music plays in the background. At night, there is special lighting effects. Skate rental is available. Parking is free.
