"Free leg" is a figure skating term that is used to describe the skate and leg that is off the ice. For example, when a figure skater glides on one foot, the leg that is on the ice is called the skating leg. The leg that is lifted is called the free leg.

It is common for figure skating coaches to ask a skater to stretch and extend the free leg back when a skater lands a jump or pulls out of a spin.
