"Free foot" is a figure skating term that is used to describe the skate that is off the ice. For example, when a figure skater glides on one foot, the foot that is on the ice is called the skating foot. The foot that is lifted is called the free foot.

It is common for figure skating coaches to ask a skater to turn out the free foot when a skater strokes.
