Can Serious Figure Skaters Train and Also Go to School?

More Time to Skate

The best reason to consider alternative education such as homeschooling or an online virtual education, is that a young figure skater is able to practice skating year round without having to juggle trips to and from a physical school.

Parents of figure skaters don't have to figure out how to get their child to fit homework in after a day of training, since schoolwork can be done between practice sessions.

The hours to train at figure skating can be flexible and skaters can take advantage of the empty freestyle practice sessions and public sessions that many rinks hold during the day. Skaters don't have to practice on crowded sessions after school or on very early morning sessions before school.

Life can be a bit more relaxing if a non-traditional education option is chosen for a figure skater.

Arguments Against

There have always been arguments against homeschooling, online or virtual education, or alternative education for figure skaters. Many parents feel that a traditional form of education is essential for a child to succeed in life.

Some feel that a child will not get the right "socialization" if he or she does not mix with children that are not skaters in a school environment.

Others are concerned that their child will not be accepted into a good college without a traditional education.

Some school districts do offer special schedules to serious figure skaters. Some schools allow skaters to substitute figure skating for physical education and to also be excused from elective courses. Other districts allow figure skaters to make up for classes during the summer months.

School officials don't always approve of the special arrangements made for figure skaters and argue that missing part of the school experience will leave an individual unprepared for life.

Where it Stands

There is no one solution or answer to the question on whether a figure skater should attend a traditional school or seek alternatives. Every family must decide what is best for their lives and for their children.

Homeschooling, distance education, or internet based virtual education have given figure skaters more options. Private schools also have provided alternatives. Skaters who chose non-traditional methods of education may have some advantages, but those who choose to pursue a full-day public school education and skate should be encouraged and admired.
