Guide Review - Review of "One Skater's Journey" - A Figure Skating Book by Karen Reid
Kelly lives in Connecticut. She comes from a loving and supportive family. At first her family ice skates just for fun, and her father builds an outdoor ice skating rink in the family's backyard. Kelly and her siblings enjoy hours of ice skating fun. (That part of the story almost sounds "too good to be true!")
As time passes, Kelly and her older sister begin group figure skating lessons at the local ice rink, advance slowly in the sport, and eventually become accomplished competitive figure skaters. Her brother also takes lessons and becomes interested in hockey. Eventually, Kelly and her sister take private ice skating lessons.
In the book, Kelly talks directly to the reader.
As Kelly tells her story, the reader gets to experience Kelly's first day on the ice, her first official US Figure Skating tests, and her first figure skating competition. The reader meets Kelly's coaches and meets her rivals.
As Kelly gets older, and more serious about skating, the reader also learns about the joys and sorrows Kelly experiences as a figure skater. The "dark side" of figure skating is discussed. In Kelly's figure skating journey, she meets jealous skaters and unethical coaches. She observes "bad figure skating parents."
Every figure skater has a story to tell about his or her life as a competitive figure skater. The book's author, Karen Reid, was a competitive figure skater and is now a figure skating coach. She is also the mother of a young figure skater.
One Skater's Journey may be Karen Reid's own figure story. The author has done a good job of giving readers a glimpse into the ice skating world. People of all ages will be inspired after reading this story.
