Roy Wagelein - Olympic Pair Skater

Roy Wagelein - Olympic Pair Skater:

Olympic figure skater, Roy Wagelein was considered one of the most talented pair skaters in U.S. history.

1968 Winter Olympics:

Wagelein and his partner, Sandi Sweitzer, competed in the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble, France. They placed seventh. They competed against the Russian pair skating legends Lyudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov, the 1968 Olympic pair skating champions.

National, North American, and World Figure Skating Competitor:

Roy placed second at three consecutive U.S. National Figure Skating Championships (1966, 1967, and 1968) and qualifed for three World Figure Skating Championships. He also competed in the last North American Figure Skating Championships in 1967.

Roy Wagelein's Pair Skating Partners:

Susan Berens and Roy Wagelin competed in 1966 and 1967. After she joined the Ice Follies in 1967, he teamed up with Sandi Sweitzer.

Roy and Sandi Wagelein - Ice Capades Stars:

Sweitzer and Wagelein married after the Olympics and toured with the Ice Capades. Later, the couple divorced. The couple had one child, a daughter, Kristia Lea Peloke.

Home:

Los Angeles was Roy Wagelein's home. He was a member of the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club. As a competitor, he skated at the Polar Palace, at the Pasadena Winter Garden, and at the Pickwick Center Ice Arena.

After his competitive and show skating career, he became a figure skating coach and skating director in Arizona.

Education:

Roy Wagelein was a graduate of the famous Hollywood Professional School, a private school especially geared for children in the arts and entertainment industries. The school is part of the history of figure skating in the United States since some of the school's figure skating alumni became very famous. The school's most famous figure skating graduate is Peggy Fleming.

Roy said the following about Hollywood Professional School:

    "I got to Worlds three times and to Olympics partly due to Hollywood Professional School. The short school hours gave me the opportunity to skate everyday from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM."

Memories of Roy Wagelein:

Wagelein was a large man. Some said he looked more like a football player than a figure skater. Most people who knew him found that he was very kind and fun to be around.

Died in 2008:

Roy Wagelein, was found dead in his Phoenix, Arizona home on June 25, 2008. No details about the cause of his death were released. He was 65 years old at the time of his death.
