Nick Perna is an ice skating inventor. In this article, Nick shares how his skating inventions came about. The next invention he talks about is "The 8-Mate."

The 8-Mate was my first "real" invention and that device was inspired by the fact that I used to watch kids waste a lot of patch time scribing their circles over and over again, and digging a deeper and deeper rut into the ice with the pointy end of their scribes. It just made sense to me that if they needed to see the circle outlined THAT badly, then why wouldn't you just draw it in black marker WITHOUT making a rut????!! The product was quite successful until, of course, the demise of figures.
