Junior Worlds is considered one of the most prestigious of all figure skating competitions. To qualify to compete in Junior Worlds is an honor for any figure skater.
Events
There are four events that take place at the Junior World Figure Skating Championships: Men, Ladies, Pairs, and Ice Dancing.
Competitors
Each country that participates in the Junior World Figure Skating Championships must be a member of the International Skating Union (ISU). The ISU is one of the oldest international sport federations in the world.
Each country may send at least one competitor from each branch of figure skating to Junior Worlds.
If skaters from certain countries did well in the previous year's competition, those countries are sometimes able to send two or three competitors for some events. No more than three representatives from each country can be sent from each branch of figure skating.
Each country's figure skating governing body decides on which of its skaters should compete in Junior Worlds. Sometimes these decisions are made based on skaters' placement at their country's national figure skating championships.
Previous Junior World Figure Skating Champions
Previous World Junior Figure Skating Champions have gone on to win senior events at the US National Figure Skating Championships, the World Figure Skating Championships, and the Olympics. Some of the past champions include Rachael Flatt, Caroline Zhang, Michelle Kwan, Ekaterina Gordeeva & Sergei Grinkov, Keauna McLaughlin & Rockne Brubaker, Evgeni Plushenko, Johnny Weir, Paul Wylie, and Tanith Belbin & Benjamin Agosto.
