Janet Lynn's Speech - "From Whence Comes the Joy of Figure Skating?"

Monday June 23, 2008
Janet Lynn
Figure skating legend, Janet Lynn, sent me the full transcript of the controversial speech she gave at the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Governing Council Dinner on May 2, 2008. It is attached in my About.com Figure Skating Forum.

Janet appreciates that people have been asking to read her complete speech. It was given in good will. She'd love to hear any feedback.

(1) back paragraph bracket says:

Janet Lynn speaks from the heart for all figure skaters: It is ridiculous what is happening to skating now! Current skaters truly have no idea of the language and culture on which the sport is based and their movements lack integrity (however inadvertent). The old “Evaluation of Errors in Figure Skating” makes much more sense than the current ISU “First Aid.” I do not recognize the sport myself, Janet, but you better than me to say so! Keep going! :-)

(2) Barbara Winkler says:

Hi Janet,
I attended the meeting where you gave your speech and I felt very validated.I would like to speak more with you about many of the comments you made.
I worked with Hans Gerschwiler for almost fifteen years on school figures and it was only when school figures were dropped and he retired that patches disappeared and my work toward my silver figures came to a halt.
I wrote several articles about the demise of school figures in Skating Magazine and Hans added his comments and his predictions for the future, without them.
I don’t have much time to answer you now,as I am going up to Lake Placid to work with Evelyn Kramer for two weeks.I have been competing as an adult since 2001.
If you want some further validation from Hans,Although his uncles Arnold and Jacque(sp)
have passed on,Hans is still alive and lives in Asheville,North Carolina(I don’t have his address with me,but when I get home from Lake Placid,I can get it for you.He was considered by many,a master of school figures.I have your book,Peace and Love, and I also have a book his uncle wrote on school figures.
I recently moved to Northern Maine, but over the next couple of months I could probably look up the articles I wrote and Hans’s response-but you might like it directly from him.He would love to receive a call from you at his home, since he still stays interested and is very supportive, and I know loves and respects you and your skating.
Look forward to reviewing your transcript that I just downloaded today from the Web.
Happy 4th of July, and I’m so glad to hear that you back on board. The “Skating World”needs you!!
God Bless,
Barb Winkler
I’m an adult competitor.Just started competing as an adult in 2001.
