"Ballet Secrets for Skaters"

Thursday October 26, 2006
Ballet Secrets for Skaters When I was a little girl, I went to see a ballet performance for the first time with my elementary school. It was a performance of Cinderella. I was so excited when I saw a little girl about my age on pointe. She did a beautiful pirouette and kept doing what looked like spinning over and over on one foot at the tip of her toes. What I saw was beautiful!

When I got home, I told my father about the little girl. In delight, I told him about the lovely pirouette. I have always remembered my father's reply: "Jo Ann, that little girl would be jealous of how you can spin on the ice on one foot!"

As the years have passed, I continued to perfect my figure skating skills, but I also continued to love and appreciate ballet. I have always known that ice skaters can achieve the beautiful positions of ballet on the ice and have tried to include the principals of ballet in my own skating.

I have also tried to pass the importance of ballet on to my figure skating students. Ice skaters are very fortunate that ballet experts that understand figure skating are willing to pass their knowledge on to figure skaters.
