John A.W. Nicks - Coach of Champions

Wednesday October 4, 2006
Sasha Cohen and Coach John Nicks

Sasha Cohen was coached by John A.W. Nicks during the 2006 Olympics. He also taught Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner and other figure skating champions.

I had the privilege of skating and coaching in the same ice rinks as Mr. Nicks. When he directed the figure skating programs at Ice Capades Chalets, he recommended that I get hired as a coach!

No one in the figure skating world addresses John A.W. Nicks by his first name; he is always "Mr. Nicks."

Mr. Nicks does not wear skates when he teaches. I remember him coaching from a certain spot located close to the rink's center in heavy boots or shoes as skaters jumped around him. He did not budge from that spot. I wonder if he ever was knocked down?

Mr. Nicks is not only a great coach but a wonderful man. I feel had I been able to have been under the tutelage of Mr. Nicks early in my skating I could have done more. He has a great gift of understanding of not only coaching but of human nature.
