A New Figure Skating Scandal

Thursday August 10, 2006

Wolfgang Schwarz, who won the men's figure skating event in the 1968 Olympics has been sentenced to prison. He plotted to kidnap the daughter of a Romanian businessman and hold her for a ransom of nearly four million dollars.

This is the newest scandal in figure skating. There are other scandals that have caught the attention of the general public.

The most publicized scandal in figure skating history happened just before the 1994 Olympics. This scandal involved Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. Harding allegedly conspired to harm Nancy Kerrigan. Kerrigan was hurt in the incident, but did recover and won an Olympic Silver Medal.

Another scandal happened at the 2002 Olympics where the French and Russian judges collaborated to allow the Russian Pair Team to win the Gold. After this scandal was brought out into the open, the system of judging figure skating was changed.
