A Tribute to Mary McKinstry - Super Skating Mom

Sunday July 23, 2006

Mary McKinstry passed away earlier this week.

Her daughter, Juli McKinstry, was a member of the U.S. World Figure Skating Team in 1973 and 1974.

Mrs. McKinstry was not only Juli's mom, but the "mother" to many young skaters in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Every summer, in Squaw Valley, California, Mrs. McKinstry ran "The McKinstry House," which was a boarding house for young girls who came to Squaw Valley to figure skate.

1980 Olympic Bronze Medalist and 1978 World Champion Charlie Tickner was also at Squaw Valley during those summers. His mother ran a similar boarding house for male figure skaters.
