Ice Dancers Rebekah and Joel Schneider-Farris
Pair Skaters Rebekah and Joel Schneider-Farris There's a new competition that both ice dancers and pair skaters may want to take part in. It's called the Pikes Peak Classic. The event will take place from September 27--28, 2008 at the Colorado Springs World Arena. Pair events will include Pre-Juvenile through Senior level events, and dance events will include couples dance for Pre-Juvenile levels and above, solo dance and open ice dance events.

The event is sponsored by the Broadmoor Skating Club. Already, figure skaters from Europe, Canada, and all parts of the U.S. have expressed interest in taking part in this competition. It is hoped that eventually The Pikes Peak Classic will be as big as the Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships or the Indy Challenge for Pairs and Dance.

Casting Call: MTV Wants Competitive Figure Skaters

MTV wants to do a True Life episode featuring teenagers or young adults who are competitive. They'd like to hear stories about friends who are struggling because they are fighting over a coveted spot. Competitive figure skaters may fit into this scenario. For example, do you know of two skaters that are close friends, but both want to win regionals or sectionals? Does their friendship struggle because of figure skating?

Those interested in being considered for this MTV True Life episode should contact Sarah.Geismer at (212)654-3966.

What is the Difference Between a Twizzle and a Spin?

Synchronized Twizzles
It's easy to confuse twizzles and spins since both moves rotate. What is the difference? Spins last longer than twizzles. Spins stay in one spot. Twizzles move down the ice. Ice dancers do synchronized twizzles in their free dance programs, but twizzles are also included in footwork sequences done by single skaters, pair skaters, and in synchronized skating. Also, most figure skaters agree that twizzles are more difficult to do than spins.

The famous Ice Follies skating show comedian, Mr. Frick, passed away on April 14, 2008. Find a Private Skating Teacher

About.com's Figure Skating Guide, Jo Ann Schneider Farris, Coaching a Student
Unlike ballet, dance, or gymnastics, where learning occurs in a group lesson format most of the time, figure skating is mastered through private lessons. So….if you are really interested in mastering figure skating, your first step is to select a private lesson coach.

Lost Figure Skating Photos Found After 30 Years

1976 U.S. National Pair Medalists Bill Fauver & Alice Cook and Tai Babilonia & Randy Gardner
1976 Olympians Terry Kubicka and David Santee In 1976, at the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, amateur photographer, LeRoy Miltner, took some photos as the skaters that qualified for the Olympics were introduced to the audience. Shortly afterward, he misplaced the precious photos. Thirty years later, he found them and I'm delighted to share his lost (now found) photos!

Starting Figure Skating Late in Life

Figure Skater Barbara Murry Today I received a letter from an adult figure skater. Her story is inspiring! She has given me permission to share it.

A Letter From Barbara Murry, an Adult Figure Skater:

As an adult skater who didn't receive any instruction until age 62, I want to comment on your discussion on "when is it too late to start skating?"

Of course we older starters will have some limitations compared with those who start as kids, young or even middle aged adults. However, I just have to say that my coach has never let age be an issue with me. I learned all the single jumps except the Axel within a few years of starting lessons and am now a "Silver" level skater at Adult Nationals.

At 69 I am working on the Axel and am hopeful that I can learn it and possibly one or two double jumps as well. I guess I have been fortunate to progress this far, but I hope you won't say anything to discourage people in their 50's or 60's from taking up the sport and, depending on their physical condition, attempting all the jumps and spins as I have. It has helped me stay in great shape and I want to see others benefit and enjoy the sport as I have.

Thanks for listening!

Dalilah Sappenfield's Pair Skating Champions Entertain in Denver

Keauna McLaughlin, Dalilah Sappenfield, and Rockne Brubaker
Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker

Today I went to see "Showtime on Ice" in Denver. What made the show extraordinary was that ten of Dalilah Sappenfield's pair skating teams performed including 2008 U.S. National Pair Skating Champions Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker. Sappenfield made history in 2008. Her students won the novice, junior, and senior pair titles at the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships. This is the first time in U.S. figure skating history that one coach taught all the national pair champions. She was introduced at the beginning of the show and presented with flowers.

In addition to individual performances from the champion pair skaters, ten of Sappenfield's pair teams performed together in a group number to "Breaking Free" from Disney's High School Musical. In that number I saw twists, throws, and lifts. Death spirals were done in groups of two - picture this: two guys doing back outside pivots and two girls circling them with their heads upside down as one! Larry Ibarra, Dalilah's adopted son, did a back flip near the end of the spectacular performance. There is only one word that can describe what I saw: Wow!
